CASE STUDY: PROCESS PIPING FOR RENEWABLE NATURAL GAS

Posted: March 2025

ABOUT THE CLIENT

Building Crafts, a general contractor specializing in industrial, municipal, and commercial markets, was contracted to support Synthica St. Bernard, LLC’s joint project with UGI for a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in St. Bernard, Ohio. This project is part of a broader effort to convert industrial organic waste and pre-consumer food waste into sustainable energy.

To meet the stringent piping and welding requirements necessary for transporting biogas, compressed natural gas, and other process materials, Building Crafts turned to SWF Industrial for their expertise in process piping fabrication.

The Problem

The project required intricate process piping solutions, including hot and cold water lines, compressed burner natural gas lines, biogas, and source-separated organic waste (SSOW) piping.

However, the weld specifications for the project left critical details open to interpretation. Given the complexity of welding for natural gas applications, the project needed a structured approach to establish the correct welding procedures and ensure compliance with industry standards. Additionally, a national energy company overseeing portions of the project required third-party verification of weld quality.

The Solution

SWF Industrial worked closely with Building Crafts, the energy company, and the weld inspectors to develop clear welding procedures. Collaborating with the inspector from the State College division, SWF’s team developed and qualified a welding process that met the dual requirements for both liquid and gas piping applications.

This dual process accounted for variations in material specifications and controlled costs while ensuring compliance regardless of what type of piping would later move through the facility.

To further validate the integrity of their welds, SWF coordinated X-ray inspections during off-peak shop hours. The results confirmed what SWF’s craftsmanship has consistently demonstrated: exceptional quality and adherence to the highest industry standards.

The Result

With SWF’s expertise across design, fabrication, logistics, and project management, all required process piping was fabricated and delivered to the site on schedule. While the project remains active, SWF stands by to provide ongoing support as needed.

This successful collaboration not only reinforced SWF’s relationship with Building Crafts but also positioned them as a knowledgeable and reliable partner in the growing RNG sector.

By demonstrating creativity, adaptability, and technical precision, SWF Industrial helped shape a sustainable energy project that will contribute to the future of renewable biogas production. Their ability to navigate specifications, value-engineer effective welding solutions, and uphold rigorous quality standards ensures that they remain a trusted resource for contractors and energy companies alike.
